I bought a cute dress yesterday to put over leggings. I hate change rooms and so I didn't try it on. I just took the size I normally wear with the thought that if it doesn't fit, I'll just exchange it.
I put it on this morning, looked in the mirror and my face dropped...into a smile.
It was TOO BIG!!
Well fuck me. I have not experienced that in, well, years!
I did my happy jig and beamed down the stairs to the man who was drinking coffee and playing PS2 Guitar Hero.
"What do you think?"
"It's too big for you!"
"Exactly!! Oh my God! Do you realise what you have just said to me?"
"It's too big?"
"Yeeesss!!!" I break out into 'Hallelujah!' and dance around the room a little.
"Shit, I should have just said that every time you ask me "what do you think?"...it would have saved me a lot of agony over 5 years."
"Ha! You're funny! Let's take a moment. It's. too. biiiig!"
I have had a permanent grin on my face the entire day!
Now. I'd like to take a minute to address clothing shop owners who have changing rooms.
I am no expert, although I am the typical gal who loves clothes and accessories, so here is my question.
Why the hell are there bright, unflattering lights that show up every lump, bump and pore?
If I had to own a store with change rooms, I'd find "thin" mirrors, with soft attractive lighting and enough hooks to hang up all the clothes plus enough space to move around in.
I'm just saying.
Blondie Boutique. Nice ring to it. Oh and all my blogging friends would get free clothes.
Just as well I don't have a store. I'd be bankrupt before I open! Hahaha!
Oh and...I am seriously looking for a cotton dress that can be casually worn that looks like this - anyone know of a place??

"IT'S TOO BIG!"
I know a shop with changing rooms like you'd want. They're selling lingerie and they have big changing rooms with dimmed light and brown mirrors. Awesome. ;)
That dress looks sexy! :) Unfortunately, I can't help you find that dress... H & M? Possibly?
Definitely one to celebrate! I know, what's wrong with change-room designer people? Are they trying to make us hate how we look or what? That is a stunning dress. If you find it, let me know where, seeing as I'm far away from Jozi, I could buy one too and never bump into you wearing the same dress!
The worst changing rooms ever have to be foschini...plus hate those stupid curtains that never truely close!
LOL @ moe...
anyway, stunning dress, i have no clue where to find one... that's very specific fabric that hangs that beautifully... have it made maybe?
actually i'm not talking to you, the dress was too big???????? *sob*

Hi sweetie,
If you are looking for a maxi dress you can get a printed black and white one at Woolies. Very simple. Also Mango has good colourul prints. As does Rage and Jo Borkett. This summer, prints on maxi dresses are huge so i doubt you'll find a plain coloured one.
We have just started a fashiony type blog - its called beauty beulah. Please check it out and we can exchange links if you like.
Good luck with the dress hunting!
See, now this is where I'd go all apeshit cause my wife would need to make a few more trips to the mall for clothes that fit!
Oh I love that feeling we your shopping and you have to try on smaller and smaller sizes :) Had that with a pair of guess jeans the other day - it was AMAZING!
Ok...here is my little designer input on the change room design (since I did do shop fitting for a living) ... Basically the changerooms are the last thing to be really designed. It then becomes a budget issue. Most of the thought and money spend and emphasis is on the front of house display and design.
With regard to the mirrors..unless you go down to the mirror factory and select each mirror yourself you just get whatever cut of mirror you get. (you cant go down and pick every mirror..esp if it is coming from a different part of the country!)
And lighting...well as a designer you never win here. The electricians will put what ever bulbs they want..which are normally the cheapest ! As designers you can specify the light fittings but never the actual bulbs that get put in.
Plus there are regulations on the light levels that are required for peoples health and saftey in public areas which means that mostly the light level are much brighter then you would have at home.
ok i'll stop there :)
